Assignment Three - Animation Review and Feedback

My Personal Response -

I feel that I did well with my animation sequence, but it could of been improved in a lot of different ways. I think that I could of has more detail added into it, in forms of the background and the clay models. I also could of edited it in a different way, so that it all flowed a lot smoother. But, I am proud of what I produced during the given amount of time, and think I did do the best I could at the time.

I think I did follow a good script, and kept to the theme very well throughout it. I also feel that the models were a good fit to the theme, and made it easy for people to understand what is going on.

What Response Have I Received To My Animation? -

The feedback overall has been a positive response to the animation. People have said that all of the background, and models made match the theme of the animation. They have also said that has been edited to a good standard, with no glitches or anything throughout the short sequence, everything flowing together rather smoothly.

The music has also gone down smoothly, people saying it again fits the theme of the animation, and doesn't come up with any errors in the animation. They also said it does contain some good amounts of humor, and you can understand what is going, what the script is meant to be, as you watch the animation.

Based On This Level of Response, How Could You Have Improved Your Production? -

I could of been more careful when creating the animation, as to not knock anything out of place during the sequence, like that paper that made up the base of the set. I would also maybe change the music throughout the animation, so that it helps to show the change in emotion in a each little bit. For example, when the clown begins to go crazy, I would put in a more fast paced piece of music, so that it helps show that things have changed.

Will You Make These Improvements Based On The Feedback?  -

Yes I would, as to help myself achieve higher grades, and also know how to improve for other pieces of animation in the future. It would help me to improve upon many different skills, that could make my work a higher standard the next time, and make this animation better then the original version.

Assignment Brief

·         The Development (history) of video editing, from the start of cinema to modern NLE editing systems
·         The purposes of editing: how we create pace and engage the viewer through editing
·         The conventions of editing: continuity, jump cuts, the 180 degree rule, dissolves (uses of), shot-reverse-shot, cutting to a sound-track

A critical assessment of these topics would include an understanding not just of what the history of editing is, but also how the develop editing has affected the work of modern film makers eg. A understanding of how jump cuts were developed and how they are used today. Examples of historical use and present days use would also be required. Students should also consider how their knowledge of the history of editing has influenced their own editing.

Page Layout

Font -Tekton Pro, bold. (A serif, gothic font is what I used for the poster)

Serif - In typography, a serif  is a small line attached to the end of a stroke in a letter or symbol.

Sans Serif - This is a font that doesn't contain any Serif's.

Roman -It is the thick and thin parts of a letter in text.

Gothic - It is how thick the font of a word/text is.

For the font, I wanted a style that represented chalk on a chalkboard, or like it was something someone had handwritten. The font Tekton pro fit this style, and fits well with the theme of the poster. It is a cursive style font, making it look like someone has written it out, which was the effect I wanted for the poster.

All the images used on the poster, I sourced from Google images. Each of the images is similar in style, and fits in with the poster and what it is trying to represent. I chose the images, because they look like chalk drawings of different transportation types, which was what I wanted to include on the poster. Before using them, I made sure there was no copyright issues with the images.
I cropped all of the images down to particular size, making sure each one of them was the same size in the end, before adding them to the poster. By doing this, they would all come out one size when printed. I also cropped out any unneeded parts of the image. For example, any text that came attached to the image. I didn't add any effects to the image, apart from trying to blend them in with the background, so that it all went together as one.

This is a screenshot of the poster. It shows everything that I have included in the poster. It shows I include the Local Motion logo, and that I have cropped and resized it like the other images, so that it comes out as one certain size when printed. It also shows the type of text I used, and how i made it fit in with the theme of the poster.

Assignment 2 - Stop Motion Animation Sequence

In this blog, I am going to be posting details about the animation I am creating, talking about what type I am doing and all the work and detail that goes into it. For my animation, I have decided to a type of model animation, using Clay. Examples of clay animation are;

Each of the videos above, are different examples of clay animation, all different and unique in their own way. What I like about Clay animation is, you can do absolutely anything with it, as long as you are able to make the required models.

Clay Animation explanation - Clay animation, is one of the many forms of Stop Motion animation. It is pictures of multiple different still frames, all combined together to form one whole sequence. It is usually made up of ten to twelve frames per second.

Concept Ideas -
.A scene out of a favorite TV show (The Vampire Diaries, Teen Wolf, Lucifer, The Flash, Legends Of Tomorrow, Glee) Or, combine a scene from two of the shows, and recreate it as one scene in a animation
Example - Teen Wolf and The Vampire Diaries. Allison Argents death on Teen Wolf, combined with the collapse of the Other Side on The Vampire Diaries.
. Recreating a scene from a favorite movie, such as Harry Potter or The Fault In Our Stars
. Pingu combined with a death scene ?
. Original idea animation - Circus ? Superhero ?
. Original idea - A circus arena, with a ringmaster and audience. Ringmaster introduces the clown, who straight away attacks him once coming onto the stage. Knocks out the ringmaster, then takes a knife used for a different act, and threatens the audience with it. Audience flees the arena in terror, leaving the clown alone in the arena. He takes the ring masters hat, places on his head, then stares into space for a moment. Trips when walking forward, falling to the ground, laying there without a care.

I have chosen to do the this idea (Idea highlighted in red) as it allows me to be much more creative with the sequence. I will be able to do everything in a certain way, and not have to base it off a certain script, so that it fits the idea it is being based off.

Script -
Scene 1 - Ringmaster stands center of the arena, with an audience stood tot he side watching him, watching him introduce the next act.
Scene 2 - The clown comes out, and everything seems fine. Approaches Ringmaster and punches him, making him fall to the ground out cold.
Scene 3 - Grabs a knife prop from the side, and begins to walk toward a now terrified audience. One by one, they begin to flee the arena, leaving the ringmaster alone with the clown.
Scene 4 - Clown just watches them go, before walking back over to where the ringmaster it laid, taking away his hat and putting it on his own head.

Scene 5 - Walks to the center of the arena, staring into space, falling to the ground silently.

Models and Background  -

When creating the models, I have researched into other peoples creations, to get a idea of how to make them seem realistic. To do the sequence, I need to create five different models in total. The clown, ringmaster and three audience members. Here are pictures of all of the models, after I finished creating them.

To design these models, are researched different designs online, to see what other have done when creating models like these. I based the designs off of all the examples I found, using blue, black, white, yellow, red and green colored modelling clay. I also made the props using the same clay, but mixed some of the colors together, to get a different color or a lighter shade of the color. The props, were made to make it all seem more realistic, like it was a real circus.

This is what I chose to use for my background. I picked this as it fits the theme of the animation, and looked the best fit with the models.

My Animation Sequence;

https://vimeo.com/201276936

My animation sequence, does follow the script and idea that I had planned for it, though could of been done better. The camera was put at a low angle, as to make sure I only got eh background and models in, not any of the other surroundings. The lighting is very dim, but helps give a dim and suspense filled aspect to the animation.
In the background, I put generic circus music to play, as it fits the theme and makes sense. The piece should appeal to a older target audience, those that like the idea of clowns and circuses, due to the humor within it. I should appeal to children and teenagers, maybe even some younger adults.

Music - Here is the link to the music that I used with the animation.

Assignment 2 - Creating Our Own Animation

In this blog, I am going to be posting details about the animation i am creating, talking about what type I am doing and all the work and detail that goes into it. For my animation, i have decided to a type of model animation, using Clay. Examples of clay animation are;

. Original idea animation - Circus ? Superhero ?
. Original idea - A circus, in which a clown goes mad and begins to chase after the audience.
Background, of a circus ring, and multiple different models would be needed. Clown, ring master and multiple different audience members.

Script -
Scene 1 - Normal circus scene, everything is  normal. Ring background with the outline of a audience surrounding the models. Circus music playing in the background.
Scene 2 - Ring master enters and greets the audience, sound of laughter edited into the background. He introduces the first act. Leaves the ring.
Scene 3 - Clown enters the ring. At first, everything goes fine and the crowd enjoys his performance . Then he messes up one of his tricks, and the crowds laughs at him, making the clown grow angry.
Scene 4 - Clown lashes out at the audience, threatening them. Audience members being to flee scared, clown chases after them angrily. Ring master tries to stop, gets punched and knocked tot he ground.
Scene 5 - Clown stands alone in the now empty arena, bursting out into laughter. The laughter echo's throughout the tent

To Do Today - Get clay and start making the models.
Get materials to make background.

Done so far- I have found the background I am going to use for the animation. I am also searching for ideas for what to make my models look like. I am currently trying to print out the al different things i am going to use for my background, and print some examples out for when I begin to make my models.

Done this lesson - I have found the background and designs for the models in my animation, giving me a idea of how to make them.

.This is the image that I have decided to use as my background for the animation. It is a circus ring, that will give the idea that the entire audience has fled when the clown goes crazy.

This is the clown, that i have decided I am going to base my model off when it comes to making it. It could be easily changed to suit each different scene of the animation.

I am going to base the ring master off of this model, when it comes to designing my own models out of clay.

Time Lapse Animation

Time Lapse Animation - This is were, the camera is very rarely moved from one place. It is a serious of shots/images, taken over a certain time period, which could be hours or even days. It is focused on just one thing, and how that changes/evolves over the chosen time period.

Model Based Animation

This is a clay model animation, up to 10 seconds long. It is a sequence made up of multiple different frames, all taken one after another, having only adjusted the position of the models by a small amount each frame.

Tim burton is a film director and animator. He is know for animations such as The Nightmare Before Christmas, Corpse Bride and Coraline. His work is usually dark and gothic, but can vary at times.

There is also Otmar Gutmann who is the creator of Pingu. It is a example of Clay stop start animation. It is a animation made specially for kids, and is not as dark as work from Tim Burton.
